Understanding the Counts
How Words Are Counted
Words are defined as sequences of characters separated by whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers count as words too.
How Characters Are Counted
We provide two character counts: with spaces and without spaces. "With spaces" counts every character including spaces. "Without spaces" excludes all whitespace characters.
How Sentences Are Counted
Sentences are detected by periods (.), question marks (?), and exclamation points (!). Our algorithm is smart enough to ignore periods in common abbreviations like "Mr.", "Dr.", "etc."
How Paragraphs Are Counted
Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more line breaks. Empty lines don't count as paragraphs.
